James has over 30 years' shipping experience and is a member of major trade organisations such as the Nautical Institute and Honourable Company of Master Mariners.
James was a Merchant Navy Deck Officer serving for 15 years and gained a Master Mariners Certificate before coming ashore to read law. Since qualification, he has worked exclusively in the shipping industry and has been involved in the majority of major shipping disputes in Scotland over the last 20 years as well as having extensive shipping related commercial experience. Trustee of Bells Nautical Trust (which promotes nautical education in Scotland).
James is also author of a chapter of the Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia on Maritime Securities.
Non contentious experience includes ship sale and purchase, ship building contracts, finance and re-finance, negotiating and drafting Charterparties, Port User Agreements, Standard Terms and Conditions for Ferry operators and Port Authorities, Harbour Revision Orders and general commercial agreements in the shipping industry.
Contentious work covers the whole range of disputes found in the industry, carriage of goods, charter party disputes, shipbuilding and ship repair disputes, collisions, salvage, oil spills, personal injury and inquiries and prosecutions under the Merchant Shipping Acts and related legislation.
James enjoys sailing, fishing and shooting. He has sailed extensively and is a past Commodore of the Royal Forth Yacht Club and a RYA Instructor.
